Vancouver locals have a saying: “If you don’t like the rain, you’re going to have a hard time here.” The city gets about 168 rainy days a year. That’s nearly half the calendar.
And yet — the rain is part of what makes Vancouver Vancouver. The rainforest at Capilano looks more ancient and more green when it’s wet. The mountains emerge from the clouds in layers, revealing themselves slowly over the course of a morning. The city smells incredible after rain — cedar, ocean, coffee from the café on the corner.
First: Pack for It
Not a big heavy raincoat — Vancouver rain is usually light, consistent, and cool rather than dramatic. What you need is a good waterproof layer and non-slip shoes. Locals wear Gore-Tex everything. Layer up — the dampness makes cold feel colder than it is.
The Outdoor Stuff Still Works
Capilano Suspension Bridge — the ancient rainforest around the bridge looks extraordinary when it’s wet. The canyon below fills with mist, the cedar bark darkens to almost black, the ferns glow green. Our Capilano + Grouse Mountain private tour runs rain or shine — some of the best photos come from grey-sky days.
Stanley Park trails — the interior forest trails are sheltered by the canopy. This is where the park feels most like actual wilderness.
The Indoor Options Are Excellent
Granville Island Public Market — warm, fragrant, covered, full of excellent food. Actually better on rainy days.
Museum of Anthropology at UBC — one of the best museums in Canada. The collection of First Nations art is extraordinary, housed in a stunning Arthur Erickson building. Allow two hours.
FlyOver Canada at Canada Place — a flight simulation ride across Canada. Surprisingly impressive.
Bloedel Conservatory — a tropical dome at Queen Elizabeth Park, warm and full of free-flying birds. A particular pleasure when it’s grey outside.
The Tours Still Run
All Vancity Tours private tours operate regardless of weather. You’re in a vehicle between stops. The Capilano + Grouse Mountain tour, the Vancouver city tour, and the cruise tours all run year-round.
Don’t let the forecast stop you from coming. Pack the right layer and you’ll find that rainy Vancouver has a character that the sunny version doesn’t quite match.
Vancity Tours runs all year, rain or shine. Private tours with hotel pickup from your downtown Vancouver hotel. See all tours →
